How to Thrift Shop Without Wasting a Whole Afternoon

Thrift stores can be overwhelming without a plan. These habits make trips shorter and far more productive.

Go with a short list

Walking in looking for “anything cute” leads to hours of browsing and often nothing bought. Go in looking for two or three specific things, a denim jacket, wide-leg trousers, and you'll move through racks faster and more decisively.

Check seams and fabric first

Before checking the size tag, feel the fabric and check the seams. Natural fibers like cotton, wool, and linen tend to hold up better secondhand than synthetic blends, and tight, even stitching is a good sign of quality construction.

Try things on, even if sizing looks off

Vintage and older sizing runs differently from modern brands. Don't skip a piece just because the tag size looks wrong, it's genuinely common to size up or down two full sizes from what you'd normally wear.

Shop off-season

Coats in spring, swimwear in fall. Stores restock off-season items at lower prices since demand is lower, and you'll have first pick before everyone else starts looking for the same thing.

With a bit of a system, a 30-minute thrift trip can be just as productive as an hour of aimless browsing.
