A Realistic Guide to Sunday Meal Prep
Meal prep advice online can make it look like a full-time job. In practice, a simpler system is far more sustainable.
Prep components, not full meals
Instead of assembling five identical meals you might get tired of by Wednesday, cook components separately: a grain, a protein, and two vegetables. Mix and match them differently through the week to avoid meal fatigue.
Pick one cooking method for efficiency
Roasting several vegetables and a protein on the same sheet pan, or using one pot for grains while the oven runs, cuts down both cooking and cleanup time significantly compared to cooking each component separately.
Only prep what actually reheats well
Rice, roasted vegetables, and most proteins hold up fine. Delicate salads and anything meant to be crispy generally don't, prep those fresh instead of trying to batch them.
Keep it to 90 minutes
If your prep session is taking three hours, it's a sign to simplify the menu, not work faster. A sustainable system usually fits into a single, focused 60 to 90 minute session.
The best meal prep system is the one you'll actually repeat weekly, not the most elaborate one you'll abandon after two weeks.
